Michael Gilhooley

Michael Gilhooley is an Academic Clinical Lecturer from University College London and a previous Academy Starter Grants for Clinical Lecturers awardee. Here, he talks about his mentoring relationship with an Academy mentor, done fully remotely due to the pandemic.

From early in my career, I have been lucky enough to have had good mentorship. Such support has been invaluable in encouraging me into academic medicine. But, after moving to a new institution as an academic clinical lecturer, the Academy of Medical Sciences’ scheme provided access to mentorship for me with a quite different focus at exactly the right time.

Meritxell Canals

Professor Meritxell Canals is supported by the Academy of Medical Sciences Professorship Scheme. Here, she talks about her experiences of the Academy’s mentoring programme.

My career, as that of many others in biomedical sciences, has brought me around the world. I did my PhD in Spain, post-docs in Scotland and the Netherlands, started my lab in Australia, and after a sabbatical in New York I finally obtained a permanent position in the UK. I am now a Professor of Cellular Pharmacology, Centre of Membrane Protein and Receptors at the University of Nottingham, supported in part by the Academy of Medical Sciences Professorship Scheme.

Ashutosh Rai

Dr Ashutosh Rai is a Research Associate at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India, and the William Harvey Research Institute in London, United Kingdom.

Dr Rai shares his experience of the Academy’s mentoring programme after moving to a UK research institute for two years from India.

Behind every case study is a real journey — a doctor who found guidance at a crossroads, and a mentor who made the difference. These stories show what our mentorship programme is truly about: connecting experienced physicians with those still finding their path, creating relationships where both can grow. Each connection strengthens not just individual careers, but our entire medical community.

Have a story of your own? We'd love to hear it. Share your mentorship experience with us and inspire the next generation.
